Love Singles? How to Find Pickleball Players Who Want to Play 1-on-1

Open play is almost always doubles. Here's how singles players find each other on InstaPickleball: a profile tag, a separate singles rating, and Sessions filtered to Singles.

The InstaPickleball Let's Play sheet with a Format choice between Doubles and Singles

Show up to open play and it's four to a court, paddles in the stack, doubles all night. That's fine if doubles is your game. But if you'd rather play singles, with more running and every shot yours, finding an opponent at your level mostly comes down to luck.

Here's how to stop leaving it to luck.

1. Let singles players find you

Open Me → Edit profile → Tags and, under Play Style, pick Open to Playing Singles, then tap the check mark at the top to save. The tag stays on your profile, so other singles players can find you even on days you haven't posted anything.

We named it Open to Playing Singles on purpose: on a profile, a bare "Singles" reads like a relationship status. That one has its own tag.

2. Keep a separate singles rating

A strong doubles player isn't automatically a strong singles player. They're different games. Me → Edit profile → DUPR holds your singles and doubles ratings side by side, and the app keeps them apart everywhere it uses them.

3. Find singles players near you

On the map, tap Players on the right-hand bar, then the filter icon next to the search bar:

  • Under Tags (Optional), choose Open to Playing Singles.
  • Under DUPR, switch to Singles and set the range you want to play against.
  • Set Distance to how far you'll travel for a game.

You'll see every nearby player who matches, not just the ones posting right now. Tap Chat on a profile to set up a match.

4. Find (or start) a singles game

Prefer a scheduled game to a cold message? Tap Sessions on the map and filter to Singles to see the singles games coming up near you.

Nothing on the calendar? Start one. Tap Play, create a Session, and set Format & Players to Singles.

Or just tell people you're free. In Play → My Status, tap Singles under Format (and tap Doubles off if singles is all you want). Your post on the map shows it's a singles game you're after, and singles players can filter the map down to posts like yours.
